Chess is a game of strategy and thought. To win you need to be "on your toes" all the time. The game can change tides in an instant if you are not carefull.
there are six types of pieces in the game. The Pawn which moves one square at a time and attacks one square diagonaly forward, the bishope who can only move diagonaly and can kill anything in its path. All pieces besides the pawn can kill things in it's path. the rook moves only straight and side to side, the knight who moves in an upside "L" formation: three up and one to the side the horse can jump over people. There are also the queen, who mooves everywhere but cannot jump over people and last but never least, the king. The king is the most important pice in the game but it can only move one square at a time. All pieces besides the pawn can move backwards.
First of, lets talk about the way to win or the point of the game. The point of the game is to Capture the king. A common misconception is that you have to kill the king and that is wrong. Capturing the king makes the game more fun and tricky because you then have to back up the piece that checkmating the king. Also the king dosen't have too much time too run. A rule that is followed easily is that an attack counts as a move just like other games. Many people who play checkers make the mistake of needing to jump over pieces to kill the piece but if you noticed, only the knight can jump over pieces so the way you kill other pieces is that you land on their square. (Note: This means that the pieces that the knight jumps over don't die.) A very useful piece of information is how to get out of a check. Not check mate because that means that the king has been captured. The way to get out of check is one, you can move the king out of the way, two you can put a piece in the way of the line of attack or three, you can kill the piece that is attacking the king.
